Newport City Footbridge

Mike Otlet led the structural design of the award-winning bridge over the River Usk. Completed in 2006, the crane-like form of the V-masts suspends an ultra-thin bridge deck over the centre of the river. The 5m wide deck (in 32m transportable sections) spans 140m between the banks without any part of the structure in the tidal river.

The acclaimed bridge design won a number of awards, including the Institute of Civil Engineer’s George Gibby Award, a Structural Steel Design Award and the Regeneration Award by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
