Yarm Footbridge
Spanning 70m over the River Tees, a scheme for a new footbridge connected Yarm School to new playing fields on the other side of the river. In the early stages, OPS worked closely with the client, SH Structures, to develop concepts for the bridge to assist setting the budget price for the works. The scheme for the bridge was then developed through collaboration with Knight Architects. Using preliminary analysis of the bridge structure, OPS were able to define the sizes and arrangement of the structure that formed the basis of the architectural scheme. The bridge scheme was formed of weathering steel and as such all structural elements are exposed. This meant careful through was required for the positioning and detailing of joints in the structure. In developing the joint details a balance was be struck between creating a clean and elegant architectural form whilst also understanding the construction methodology and ensuring the structure would have been relatively simple to construct.
